Greenways are connecting routes for walking or cycling on abandoned railway lines and along riverbanks. In addition, they should match some specific characteristics, such as the continuity of the route, the separation and reduced number of intersections with the roads, and low slopes.
Greenways are already a reality in Europe and North America. In the United States, there are over 1,200 abandoned railway lines that have been converted. In Germany, there are over 600 of these routes, and in Spain, there are over 2,000 km of greenways in use.
And now Santa Catarina has the opportunity to enter the Greenways map. This is the ‘Caminho do Rio do Peixe’ (Valley of Fish River Route). The project, developed by Brandalise Arquitetura, foresees the conversion of the Santa Catarina stretch of the former São Paulo – Rio Grande Railroad into a bike path that crosses the state from north to south.
“They will be more than 300 km of an axis of development and attractiveness,” says Carolina Nunes, Humanität’s urban ecosystem architect who participates in the project. “People get to know their own city landscapes they didn’t know. From there, it begins to create affinities with these new points. It changes the way the locals see their own city. ”
In addition to the urban stretches that pass through the central areas of several municipalities, the ‘Caminho do Rio do Peixe’ is a potential integrator of the region. “In Brazil, few people have the quality to take their bikes and go to another city. As it is separated from cars, trucks and intersections, the Greenway encourages the participation of a whole family in the itineraries, including children. Similarly, it is not a ride against the clock. The route encourages users to experience the infrastructures and add new uses to it: recreation, contemplation of the landscape, enjoying free time with family and friends”, says the architect.
